How to cover grey hair with Wella (without it fading or going flat)

Solid, natural-looking grey coverage comes down to the right base, the right developer and a little extra natural pigment.

For dependable grey coverage, build your formula around a natural (/0) base at the client’s depth, develop with 6% (20 vol), and add more natural the more resistant or grey the hair is. Koleston Perfect Pure Naturals is purpose-built for exactly this.

Why grey behaves differently

Grey (white) hair has little or no natural pigment, and resistant grey also tends to have a tightly packed cuticle that’s harder for colour to penetrate. Fashion and tonal shades alone don’t contain enough base pigment to fully cover it, which is why coverage that looks great at the basin can fade to a translucent, ashy or patchy result a few washes later.

Build the formula on a natural base

The fix is to anchor the formula with a natural (/0) shade at the target depth — these carry the warm base pigments that replace what grey hair is missing. You can then add your desired tone on top. As a general approach, the higher the percentage of grey, the larger the proportion of natural you include; for very resistant grey, leaning more heavily on the natural (and using Koleston Perfect Pure Naturals) gives the most reliable result.

Developer and timing

6% (20 vol) is the standard for permanent grey coverage — enough to open the cuticle and deposit solidly without over-lifting. Apply to the most resistant areas first (often the front hairline and temples), give full saturation, and develop for the complete time stated on the pack rather than rushing it.

Demi vs permanent for grey

Demi-permanent Color Touch is wonderful for blending the first greys and for low-commitment, natural-looking results. But for full, lasting coverage of higher-percentage or resistant grey, a permanent like Koleston Perfect on a natural base is the dependable choice.
